Emergency Eye Exams

If you need an emergency eye examination, Clairhurst Eye Care strives to accommodate you on the same day or the first available appointment.

Symptoms

Various symptoms may signal the need for an emergency eye exam, such as

  • sudden loss or decrease of vision,
  • severe eye pain or headache,
  • eye injury or trauma,
  • redness, swelling, or discharge from the eye,
  • flashes of light or floaters in your vision,
  • foreign object in the eye or eyelid,
  • contact lens-related problems.
  • Exposure to chemicals

An emergency eye examination can help diagnose and treat the underlying cause of your eye problem and prevent further damage or complications. Our front desk staff is trained to identify emergencies and understand what qualifies. Our doctors will provide the necessary care, prescribe medications, or refer patients to specialists if needed.

You do not need a referral from your family doctor to book an emergency eye examination with us. Your eyesight is crucial, so don’t delay.

Precautions

While you wait for your appointment, it’s important to avoid certain actions that could worsen your condition or cause more harm to your eyes. Please keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes, as this could further irritate them or introduce bacteria or foreign objects.
  • Refrain from applying pressure to your eyes, as it could cause bleeding, swelling, or further damage to your eye health.
  • Do not use eye drops, ointments, or medications your optometrist has not prescribed. These could have adverse effects or interfere with the diagnosis and treatment of your condition.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses as they could trap bacteria or debris under them and increase the risk of infection or corneal ulcer.
  • Do not expose your eyes to bright light, dust, smoke, or chemicals as they could worsen your symptoms.
  • Do not use tap water to wash out your eyes. Instead, you can use saline or preservative-free eye drops.
